Aug. 13th, 2006 01:16 amTitle: Innocence
Fandom: Dark Tower
Characters: Cuthbert Allgood, Roland Deschain, Alain Johns, Jamie DeCurry
Rating: G
Summary: This wasn't originally intended to be a companion to "Experience". They just ended up working that way.
It was all supposed to work out very simply.
True, it was one of Cuthbert's ideas, and it wasn't exactly unheard of for those to go awry. And alright, maybe blowing up a stuffy-guy was something that fell into the categories of both immaturity and senseless destruction. But there were a lot of worse things a pack of eleven-year-old boys could have been getting up to on Reap Night. And besides, weren't all the grown-up townspeople down in the pavillion burning stuffy-guys, and when you thought about it, was that really so much more mature?
And besides, it was supposed to work out fine. Set the stuffy-guy up with a lapful of big-bangers in a clearing where the grass was long-dead anyhow, light the fuse, and run.
Only, as it turned out, they'd overestimated both the length of time the fuse would give them, and the number of big-bangers required to blow up a single stuffy-guy.
In the wake of the resulting explosion, the first thing Alain became conscious of was that Cuthbert was on fire. No more than a brief lick of flame along the hem of his shirt, easily dealt with, but still, on fire.
The second thing he became aware of, even as he tossed dirt on his friend to smother the flames, was that Bert was laughing his head off.
Later on, Alain, Roland, and Jamie would all scoff and shake their heads when Cuthbert talked about how much fun it was, but none of them ever quite disagreed.
