Fandom: Dark Tower
Characters: Cuthbert Allgood, Roland Deschain, Susan Delgado
Rating: PG
Summary: A brief piece set during Wizard and Glass, in which someone is in denial.
Cuthbert has never been very impressed with gray eyes.
It’s not that there’s anything wrong with them, or that he’d turn aside from a pretty girl because her eyes were gray—it’s simply that, given his druthers, he’d prefer an eye color that’s more, well, colorful. Like the bright emerald of Deborah’s eyes, or the azure sparkle of Aileen’s, even if the rest of Aileen Ritter has never been as bright as her eyes. Simply put, no girl with gray eyes has ever really caught his interest.
Never, that is, until now. Because now, as Cuthbert rides across the Drop and broods on the situation with Roland and struggles not to blame Susan Delgado for what he knows isn’t truly her fault, his thoughts keep straying back to her eyes. Among other things, yes—he’d be lying if he ever tried to claim he’d kept his own gaze at eye level when speaking to her—but mostly, what he keeps coming back to is the eyes. Those bright gray eyes.
As angry as Cuthbert may be with the way Roland’s been conducting himself these days, the truth is, Bert can’t blame his friend for having fallen so hard. After all, sometimes he thinks he was only spared the same fall by the knowledge that Roland’s had gone before. And sometimes, in spite of even that—
--But when his thoughts reach that point, Cuthbert shakes his head, and laughs at himself. He has a girl back home who’s more than just the girl his parents would like to see him marry, and Susan is his best friend’s lover, and besides that, he’s angry with them both, remember? There’s no room for thoughts like that.
But still, as he wheels his horse around and gallops back towards the Bar K, Cuthbert has to admit one thing to himself—it’s very likely he’ll never look at a girl with gray eyes the same way again.
