“Everybody’s clear on the plan, then?”
“One small question, sir.”
Mal glances toward Zoe, eyebrows raised, mentally reviewing the plan and finding nothing he’d expect Zoe to question this late in the game. “Shénme?”
“Just one little thing I ain’t clear on.” She leans forward, never losing her pleasantly casual tone. “How come it’s me in the dress?”
Instantly, there’s a snort of derisive laughter from Jayne. “’Cause we ain’t takin’ along any of the other females on this boat.”
The remark earns him you want to die, don’t you? looks from Mal, Wash, and Kaylee, but Zoe doesn’t spare him more than a sidelong glance. Not much point in trying to teach him a lesson—there’s bigger fish to be fried here.
She turns back to Mal. “That so, sir?”
For a moment, Mal is confused as to why he seems to be in more trouble than Jayne, and just sort of splutters. Sensing weakness in her prey, Zoe presses the attack.
“I’m hopin’ it ain’t, because given the length of time you and me’ve known each other, it’d be pretty yúbèn de of you to just plan on me wearin’ the dress ‘cause I’m a woman, wouldn’t it?”
“I—uh—yes!” Mal finally manages. “’Course. Man’d have to be pretty gorram stupid to make a mistake like that.”
Zoe tilts her head back a bit, amusement showing in her gaze now. “That so?”
“It is indeed.” Mal says smoothly, starting to get warmed up now. “Downright ridiculous idea.” He laughs, shaking his head. “Why, it’d make as much sense for me to be the one in the dress as you.”
Silence for a beat. Then, Zoe eyes her captain with a small, satisfied grin.
“Glad to hear you agree, sir.”
